These images were inspired by the book “The Luminaries“ by Eleanor Catton which is set in New Zealand around the gold rush of the 1860s. There weren’t many roads or railways at the time so people forged new trails, roads and railways over mountain passes and difficult terrain. Today you can still make out a lot of these trails. Some of them are still in use, others are hardly distinguishable from the landscape itself. A residual marking here and there to suggest the landscape has been manipulated by man.
